Castle Ravenloft is a board game based on Dungeons and Dragons (D&D), the original fantasy role-playing game. D&D is a pen-and-paper style of gaming first published in the 1970’s that differed from the then popular tabletop war games. A dungeon master designs and facilitates adventures while the other players experience these adventures as a group of fighters, mages, rogues and a whole host of other character classes. What made the game special was that there were rules to facilitate combat as well as non-combat encounters, bringing the ‘adventure’ to the gaming table. The players actually lived and breathed their characters that grew over time.

More specifically, the characters and setting in the Castle Ravenloft board game is based on D&D’s Ravenloft adventure module that revolves around Strahd von Zarovich, an evil vampire who pines for a lost love. This module and its setting has been so popular that it spawned a few D&D campaigns and worlds, a series of computer games, and now a board game as well. The board game uses the encounter rules from D&D 4th Edition, the 4th iteration of the D&D rulesets and manuals. This version of D&D focuses more on character placement on grids and tiles, making it more like a tabletop miniature game and very suitable to be turned into a board game.

The story and setting of the board game revolve around the vampire Strahd and his home in Castle Ravenloft. The players take on the role of a group of adventurers entering the castle with the ultimate goal of killing Strahd. However, there are many scenarios that you play through before getting to meet the dreaded vampire, each of which can take around an hour or more to complete. Your newly-formed party might start your adventuring career by recovering magical treasure from the castle dungeons, then working your way up to killing a cunning goblin sorcerer, then a dragon, then Strahd himself. Each scenario will have its own special rules and goals, with end bosses and other monsters you must fight.

In the D&D role-playing game, there is a player who has to take on the role of dungeon master and control the monsters, dungeon design and how the adventure progresses. In Castle Ravenloft, this is not necessary and everyone is able to play as part of the adventuring team. This is possible via an interesting mechanic where things pop up pretty much randomly.

During each player’s turn, they have a choice of exploring a new room in the dungeon. This is done by taking a random tile from a draw deck and placing it on an unexplored edge of the map. This may reveal a new monster (again drawn randomly from a deck) and an encounter effect (you guessed it: randomly from a deck). These encounter effects cover everything from traps that you stumble on, to events such as a goblin seeing your group and running off to get help. In effect, the map and the flavor of the dungeon are able to grow organically without the need for someone to control them.

The dungeon isn’t the main focus of the game though. It’s an adventure game, and the focus is you (or the characters you play, to be more accurate). There are 5 characters you can play: fighter, rogue, ranger, wizard, cleric. Each character has their own unique powers and flavor. The fighter is a close-range melee defender whose job is to protect the rest of the party. The rogue is a close-range melee striker who uses daggers to devastating effect. The ranger attacks her enemies from afar using her bow. The wizard uses arcane magic to damage and control the enemy, while the cleric uses divine magic to protect and heal the party. Whichever class you decide to play, you will be able to customize their powers to create your ideal character.

Whenever there are monsters to fight (which is almost always), the player characters and monsters are represented using miniatures on a grid map composed of the random map tiles. D&D 4th Edition rules are used for these encounters. The rules aren’t very complex, and basically dictate what actions, attacks and moves you can make each turn. Most of the time, dice are rolled to see if your attacks hit and how much damage they do. Your objective during these encounters is pretty straightforward: kill the monsters and claim their treasure! After a few of these encounters, your character may even increase in level, earning you higher stats and more powers to use.

Castle Ravenloft is an exciting adventure game that also includes a fair amount of tactical maneuvering. You will feel a sense of achievement as your party slowly works its way from the easy treasure-hunting scenarios to the final scenario where you face off against Strahd. However, you don’t have to worry that the game does not have replay value. Due to how the dungeons and events are set up so randomly, no two games will ever be the same.

Castle Ravenloft is a fun game for players who like cooperative games or wish to immerse themselves in a high-fantasy adventure. It can also be used as a way to try out D&D and see if you will like playing the actual D&D role-playing game. Was Game 6 of the 1986 World Series the Best Game Ever?

Over 23 years later, the memories of an epic baseball game still burn bright in the minds of many baseball fans. Mets fans appreciate this game more so than anyone else, and Red Sox lovers still have nightmares about what took place on that crazy night.

The New York Mets and the Boston Red Sox met in a World Series during the 1986 baseball season. Both had been the best teams in their respective leagues, and the stage was set for a great series.

To the surprise of many, New York lost its first two games at home, going down pretty easily to a confident Red Sox team. Things didn’t look too promising for the Mets and their fans.

Fortunately, the team’s fortunes turned during the next few games and the Mets evened the series before falling behind by a 3 games to 2 count. Game 6 would give the Red Sox a chance to close out the series in Queens.

It looked like this was about to occur. Boston led the game by two runs in the bottom of the 9th inning and the Mets had no one on base. The champagne bottles were corked and the game was all but done.

A digital sign even proclaimed Boston the winner, congratulating them on their victory. Tears filled the eyes of many NY players.

Somehow, the Mets kept the game alive with a few base hits after being down to their last strike on several occasions. Before long, a wild pitch sent a runner home, tying up the game. The crowd was uproarious, this was history in the making.

After this, the most unexpected of all events occurred. During that same inning while the game was tied, Mookie Wilson hit a dribbler down the first base line. What looked as if it would be an easy out went straight through the legs of Bill Buckner, sending Ray Knight home and giving the Mets the win.

They went on to win game 7 of the World Series, making this one of the most meaningful and memorable games in the history of professional baseball.

Many baseball fans will still claim to this day that this was the best baseball game ever played. Based on the way this all happened, they may very well be right.

Why Diablo III Will Be the Best Game Ever Made

The Diablo series is the best PC game series ever made. Of course this is just a matter of opinion. A lot of people will say that World of Warcraft is the best RPG ever made but I disagree.

Brief History

Diablo I was created by a group of programmers from a company called Blizzard Entertainment. The first title was just called “Diablo”. In the first title you started off as 1 of 3 classes of characters and battled your way through many monsters, bosses and story line until you killed Diablo himself.

Diablo II came out next which was a much better game and they added 4 new classes of characters. They continued the story line and introduced new characters and added tons of new items. This game reigned in it’s time and out of all the games I ever played (which is a LOT!) this game was always the best. I literally played it for 5 years.

Diablo III

At the time of this article this game had not been released however the mere trailers and teaser videos alone have got many people hyped up and looking forward to this 3rd version. They overhauled the game completely but kept all of the important elements which make Diablo the best in its class of hack n’ slash. They kept the game in third person view but enhanced the graphics tremendously using directx 10. This is exactly was I was hoping they would do and I am very excited.

Gameplay

Diablo is a hack n’ slash game. This means that you can attack or get attacked by many monsters in real time and your attacks are based on how many times you press buttons, etc. The skills on Diablo are setup so that you can switch between them quickly and created various strategies. Skill animations are notorious for looking beautiful in Diablo.

Graphics

They went ahead and created Diablo III using DirectX 10. This makes for a much more pleasant visual experience due to details, physics and destructible environments. Third person view remains the same, thank God! I always said it would ruin the game if they went first person view like they did World of Warcraft.

Multiplayer

Another one of Diablo’s fun factors is the online play with parties of people interacting throughout the world. Diablo has always been free to play online but I have not seen if this will be true in the third version. Here is to hoping…

Addictive Gameplay and Random Environments

2 other distinct Diablo attributes is the endless addictive gameplay. Diablo was always built to randomly create dungeons and levels so that the replay value is tremendous. The extreme quantity of items, character and skill strategies, and weapon mods make this game extremely addicting.

Diablo III should jump into one of the best games of all time in the next years to come. I believe it will be a big competitor to World of Warcraft. Loyal Diablo fans know this and they are very excited.

“They wanted to introduce a strong digital component and create a dynamic, blended learning experience,” explains Chadwick. “The primary goal was to include a digitised element that would engage and excite the users, ultimately inspiring them to embrace and internalise the existing content. These elements seek to augment the current programme taking the on-boarding experience to the next level.”

In partnership with SA augmented reality and game developer studio, Fuzzy Logic, Chadwick’s team developed a concept that leveraged the existing training format – classroom with an adjudicator – and weaved in a powerful game component to the process.

Essentially, each group of learners was assigned an augmented reality image marker, which, when viewed through an iPad, brought to life a seed. Through answering questions and taking part in ‘events’ during the training course, individuals or groups could win points which helped the seed grow into a tree. The rate of growth was determined by the performance of the individual or group, and the tree would move through the seasons illustrating the progression of the participants through the course. Using these augmented reality elements, Fuzzy Logic designed a highly visual experience that not only heightened the gaming element, but also ensured that the training became both fun and compelling for users.

“Gamification looks at the way people engage with content, systems or even people, and it tries to enhance those interactions and ultimately improve the outcome,” explains Jason Ried, MD, Fuzzy Logic. “Training is a very natural place for gamification, as there is already what we call ‘a core loop’ within it – which neatly mimics that same element within games. Users or trainees learn, perform, and are finally rewarded.”

The ‘game’ or training process cannot be too straightforward or predictable, cautions Ried, and it also needs to reward and acknowledge each participant – each of whom has varying strengths, weaknesses and skill sets – in ways that appeal to them, sometimes as individuals and sometimes as a group. Indeed, when we ‘win’ or accomplish a goal, the feel-good endorphins are released, and we naturally seek more. According to Ried, the best games are strategically layered in such a way as to ensure the best ratio of playing to winning as this ensures that users are perpetually chasing the endorphin-fuelled high (hence the addictive nature of our favourite games!).

“You can’t reward people [within the game] for every action as the endorphin element will become less effective,” he adds. “By breaking that constant positive input, you create an imbalance or a challenge to the user’s brain. If something is hard or difficult and you then overcome the challenge, the resulting endorphin output will make you feel even better than before.”

As technology becomes both more sophisticated and accessible, it is likely that solutions incorporating Augmented Reality and gamification will become more prevalent.

“For companies of all sizes and across sectors, these types of tech-driven interventions can be a radical game-changer, for staff, leadership and ultimately their customers,” adds Ried.

Games You Can Play At A Stuffed Animal Party

For my soon to turn 6 year olds birthday this year, she decided that she wanted to have a stuffed animal party. A stuffed animal party basically means that all the little girls invited will bring their favorite plush toy so that they can all play with them together. This is a great theme, but in order to keep the young ones attention, I knew I would have to be very inventive when it comes to creating games in order to keep everyone happy.

We had ten girls invited as guests, and I knew that with those kinds of numbers it was quite possible that someone would forget their plush toy at home. So that is why I decided to have a couple extra stuffed animals and teddy bears on hand. And sure enough two girls forgot their toy. One of the girl’s forget her favorite teddy bear in her mom’s car, and the other had just lost her favorite plush dog at school. Luckily, my extras managed to head off the tears at the pass, and then we could get to the games. Here are some of the games we played, and hopefully they’ll be able to help you if you want to create your own stuffed animal party.

The Stuffed Animals Treasure Hunt

This one I had to think ahead for, as before the party started I hid a teddy bear somewhere in our house. I then used post-it notes to write down some clues. The first post-it note I gave to my daughter’s plush dog, Fluffy. This clue would lead them to the next and so on, until they (and their companion stuffed animals) finally found the teddy bear. But the game didn’t end there. The teddy bear himself contained another clue. You see, I had gotten some teddy bear cookies (to continue the theme) and hidden them also. This was a great game and all of the girls had a lot of fun.

While not as inventive as the treasure hunt, this variation of pin the tail is a classic for a reason. My daughter had a big stuffed bunny she had gotten for Easter. Realizing this would be perfect, I turned the bunny around so it’s back was to the girls, and made a tail out of Velcro and some bandanas. That way, the girl’s could be blindfolded, and whoever got the tail in the right place would stick with the Velcro. We played in teams, and the team that won (by pinning the tail the most times) would get to be the first to take a picture in the bunny’s lap. This kept the girl’s busy, and the prize was benign enough that we didn’t have any jealousy issues.

Stuffed Animals Fairy Tale

After stuffed animal crackers and cake, we had time for one last game. We turned their plush toys, every plush dog, stuffed cat, stuffed raccoon and teddy bear, into a character in a fairy tale. This really let them be creative, and I was careful to make sure that each little girl’s plushie got an important role. Since everyone wanted to be princesses, I let everyone do that and then they had to work together to overcome obstacles and get to the palace in time for the queen’s birthday. This imaginative game was a great success.

As you can see, everyone had a wonderful time and my daughter said this was the best birthday party she had ever had! And the best part, I was able to throw a great party without breaking my budget! My daughter decided that this was a good omen for her year six, and I have to agree. With a little bit of imagination, a stuffed animal party can be a great way for everyone to have a blast!
